Alvin Barkley, the man accused of fatally stabbing barber Yohan Hunte during a row over electricity, was yesterday arraigned on a murder charge.
Barkley appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where Magistrate Judy Latchman read the capital charge to him.
Barkley was not required to plead to the charge, which is based on the allegation that on September 2, at Croal Street, in Georgetown, he murdered Hunte, 37, who was known as `Man on the Roof’, of Laing Avenue.
No details on what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court. However, police had said that around 10:15 am on Sunday, Hunte and Barkley argued over the supply of electricity and during the exchange, he was stabbed to his chest. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he later succumbed.
According to persons in the area, Hunte observed Barkley utilising an electrical outlet that belonged to him, which led to the argument. The two men started to hit each other and the suspect later pulled out a pair of scissors and stabbed Hunte to the chest.
Hunte got his alias from being among a group of prisoners who managed to climb atop the roof of the Camp Street prison on several occasions to protest conditions there.
The case was transferred to Court One for October 25.
