Tony Hanoman wins Apex chess tourney

Former national chess player Tony Hanoman with a FIDE rating of 1932, on Sunday won the male Open category of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Apex Insurance Brokers-sponsored one day, rapid chess tournament at the Kei-Shars Sports Club.

The Sweden-based Hanoman, who leaves today after a short holiday, won on a tie-break  after he tied with  former national champion Kriskal Persaud for first place.

Hanoman and Persaud ended the tournament with six an one half points each while Glenford Corlette, who placed third, ended with five points.

Anthony Drayton won the junior category with national junior champion Haifeng Su second. Saeed Ali, was third, Ron Motilall, fourth and Pardev Bissoon, fifth.

Prize winners following the conclusion of the Apex Insurance Brokers rapid chess tournament on Sunday at the Kei-Shars Sports Club.

Twelve year-old Sheriffa Ali, was awarded the best Under-13 player after recording the same score as the third to fifth placed juniors.

The points standings among the juniors in the seven round competition; Drayton five, Su, four-and-a-half,  Ali, Ron Motiall, Bissoon and Sheriffa Ali four points each.

Following the presentation of prizes at the end of the tournament, Hanoman advised the junior players to concentrate on chess openings to improve their play after observing that many of them were lacking in that regard. He warned the juniors that they may not be able to match up their opponents if they did not know opening theory.
