PINE BASIN, Barbados, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago held the stronger hand but Guyana kept their fortunes afloat on the second day of their Regional Under-19 three-day Championship match here yesterday.
Already comfortably placed at 313 for five on resumption following a day’s break for Carnival celebrations here on Monday, T&T extended their first innings by a further 11.1 overs, adding 62 runs for the loss two wickets before declaring 35 minutes ahead of lunch on 375 for seven. Guyana have so far replied with 180 for four and enter today’s final day still 195 runs behind on first innings.
Left-handed opener Jeremy Soloanzo, 139 not out overnight, finished not out on 160, and lost overnight partner Anthony Simmons and Adrien Daniel (7) along the way.
Ater his marathon stay in the middle on the first day he attained yet another landmark by going past 150 after 376 minutes of batting.
He and Simmons, who played aggressively for 40, lifted the sixth wicket stand to 106.
The declaration eventually came immediately after Daniel dragged a delivery from Dexter George onto his stumps to provide the right arm medium pacer with his only wicket.
Mark Tyrell had earlier accounted for Simmons’ wicket and returned the best figures of two for 60.
Trinidad and Tobago’s pacers Tevin Robertson and Philton Williams, exploiting the overcast conditions, made life uncomfortable for the early Guyana batsmen.
In-form left-hander Brian Sattaur (2) was undone by an in-swinging delivery from Williams (2-38) which slipped between bat and pad and removed the middle stump before the break.
Guyana made slow progress in the afternoon session with opening bat Tagenarine Chanderpaul hardly playing a stroke in anger, advancing his lunch-time score by 13 in the two hour period.
Both Chanderpaul Hemraj and Mohan Ramdeen played aggressively for 31 and 47 respectively but Ricardo Adams (53 not out), who replaced Ramdeen, lit up the gloomy setting with a number of lusty blows.
The left handed all-rounder smacked four fours and an equal number of sixes while dominating an unbeaten, fifth wicket alliance worth 66 with captain Shawn Pereira, who was unbeaten on 14 at the end.
