‘C’ Class open tennis tourney at gym this weekend

The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is hosting a ‘C’ Class Open tournament this weekend at the National Gymnasium, as part of its programme to introduce and revitalise the sport countrywide.

In keeping with this goal, the GTTA executive met with the Linden Table Tennis Sub Association on Sunday to plan next year’s programme. According to General Secretary Linden Johnson, Chairman Howard James and Secretary Shavin Greene who is on the steering committee, are expected to discuss findings from the Linden visit today.

In a recent interview with Stabroek Sport, Johnson said the Association took a decision to reach out to the mining town as the game is not played there on a regular basis. “After we saw that there weren’t any table tennis playing in certain part of the country we decided to call a sitting and we are going to begin table tennis tournaments for all ages, we are going to provide umpires, tables and ball for some of the tournament,” he said.

In the light of this the ‘C’ Class Open will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the gym from 11am. The GTTA will provide tournament fixtures, umpires and all the gear for the matches. However, a small entrance fee will be charged and Friday is the deadline for registration. Senior and national players are debarred from the tournament. Trophies and medals are being donated by Ramesh’s Trophy Stall in Bourda Market.

On December 1 Gibran ‘the Berbice Wonder’ Sarfaraz participated in the Mike Dempsey Para Table Tennis Championships (Classification 1-11) held in San Diego, USA which started on November 29. Gibran, the winner of the last two Berbice Open Singles Championships and several other national titles teamed-up with Argentine Dario Neira in the team events, and finished fourth place in the Class Ten. He also reached the last eight in the singles.
