A man who was allegedly found with marijuana during a police search on his person was yesterday remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on January 9, at Charlestown, Georgetown, Gary Nurse had 85 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Nurse, a labourer, denied the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The police’s case is that they were conducting patrol duties in the Charlestown area, where a search of Nurse unearthed the illegal substance.
Prosecutor Burgette Grant explained that while on duty at approximately 4am, the lawmen observed Nurse acting in a suspicious manner, causing them to stop and conduct a search of his person.
It was during this search, the court was told, that the police found the cannabis in his pants pocket. Nurse was subsequently informed that he would be remanded to prison and the case was transferred to Court Five for January 15, for reports and fixtures for trial.
