Six-month ‘time-out’ for man who stole teacher’s phone

A man was yesterday sentenced to a six-month jail term after he admitted to stealing a phone from a teacher’s bag, which she had left in her classroom.
At the Providence Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Leslie Sobers heard that on February 12, at the Covent Garden Primary, Aaron Yussuf, 27, of Lot 822 Diamond Housing Scheme, stole a BlackBerry Curve, valued $40,000, from Annurada Ghanie.

The prosecution’s facts stated that Ghanie left her classroom after teaching a class and Yussuf later entered the room and stole the phone, which was in her bag.

Prosecutor Shellon Daniels added that Ghanie reported the matter to the Covent Garden Police Station and Yussuf was apprehended by ranks with the phone on his person.

When given the opportunity to explain his actions, Yussuf said, “I don’t know [why] I did it; I was going to give her back it anyway.”
Magistrate Sobers subsequently sentenced him.
