Victim from Greene collision still in severe pain, undergoes more surgery

Raheem Kaleem who was badly injured in the accident at Harlem, West Coast Demerara on September 7, 2012 that claimed the life of the former Top Cop is still in severe pain and underwent another surgery on Wednesday.

The accident had claimed the lives of former Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and 10-year-old Shaffiya Jamaluddin.

At his home at Canefield, East Canje on Tuesday, Kaleem told Stabroek News that he was experiencing excruciating pain from the broken and dislocated bones.

Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital had to insert steel plates and bolts to some of them during surgeries.

He was distressed at having to go into the theatre again to fix a protruding bone on his left shoulder, for the third time.

He felt that the bone kept slipping out because the doctor had not put on a cast to hold it in place. According to him, he is still unable to walk or do anything much for himself and is in a lot of discomfort.

“I have to sleep in one position all the time; on my back and I can’t even turn…” He also had to undergo surgeries to fix his right hand that was broken at six places, as well as his legs.

Kaleem, a mechanic was travelling west along the road with his wife, Shamoon and sons; Fawaz, 16, and Reeaz, 18, along with Shaffiya and her mother, Zaitoon Hoosein when the accident occurred.

Fawaaz suffered a fractured right leg and Reeaz broke his nose while Shamoon was lucky to have escaped with just minor injuries.

Hoosein who initially suffered memory loss as a result of injuries to her head, believed that her daughter was still alive. After a few weeks she kept asking to see the child until she eventually found out the truth.

Meanwhile, Kaleem lamented that he has endured pain for “five long months…” and wondered how much longer he would have to suffer like that. The lower part of his right hand would also “burn and get numb.”

He underwent therapy but that did not help.

Adding to Kaleem’s misery was the fact that he would not be able to earn an income for a long time now to take care of his family. The only person working in his home is his wife.

He was also worried that his car he had recently bought for over $2M was beyond repairs and said all he wanted was for Greene’s family to “just buy back my car…”

He said he spent a long time at the hospital and the family had not even visited him. Kaleem was disappointed too that the police still have not taken statements from them. The man was also afraid that the matter would just be dropped and he would not be compensated.
