Man offers to pay for item he claims he did not steal

A man who told the court that he would take responsibility for repaying a store owner for an item he claimed he did not steal was admitted to bail in the sum of $20,000.

Anthony Fernandes, 54, is accused of breaking and entering the home and business place of Joanna Wang at Broad Street and stealing a hardware item valued $18,000.

Fernandes, who resides at Lot 264 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the break and enter and larceny charge when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecution explained that Wang owns a hardware store and also lives at the premises, which is a three-storey building.

On the day in question, around 11 pm, Wang looked at her surveillance camera and saw the accused in her store, the court was told; she alerted her security guard.
The prosecution added that Fernandes made good his escape, but the security guard pursued him and caught him.

When given a chance to speak, Fernandes explained that he was drinking when a security guard approached him and accused him of the crime.

He then said that he did not steal anything but would take the blame to end the matter. He said he would compensate Wang for the stolen item.

The prosecution had no objection to Fernandes being granted bail and this was set at $20,000.
The matter will continue on March 8.
