Work on Hope Canal should stop until the drainage and irrigation system has been put back in place

Dear Editor,

We the farmers of the Hope/Dochfour area support the farmers in Cotton Tree Village, Region Five, and feel they should be compensated for loss of their crops due to flooding.

Since the start of the Hope Canal we also suffer flooding whenever there is rain without being given any assistance. All that Minister Ramsammy talks about is a completion date for the canal; nothing is being said or done to fix our drainage and irrigation system. We are of the view that before drainage and irrigation is put in place we will lose more of our farmland, rather than receive the additional farmland we were promised. We feel that all work on the new canal should be put on hold until our drainage and irrigation system has been put back in place.

Yours faithfully,
