Laluni gets Nissan pick-up from Amerindian Affairs Ministry

The Region Ten farming community of Laluni Creek now boasts a new Nissan Navara costing $5.75M.

The Government Information Agency said that Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai on Saturday delivered the vehicle to the community on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Sukhai said that she was especially pleased to make the presentation as Laluni is her birthplace.

Government provided funding to the tune of $4.1M for the purchase of the vehicle and the remainder of $1.65M was the village’s contribution; funds from its 2010-2011 President grants, Sukhai stated.

The Minister said that at the 2012 National Toshaos Council (NTC) meeting, former Villager Councillor Sarah Torres had made a request on behalf of the village for an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) for the delivery of health services in the village.

GINA said that the vehicle will work under an assigned management group that will seek to coordinate a schedule and set guidelines for optimum use.

This group will also seek to establish  the cost for the various services carried out by the pick-up.

A cost, the Minister said, must be applied to use of the service to allow for the purchasing of fuel, lubricants and upkeep of the vehicle.

Torres expressed gratitude on behalf of the community for the vehicle, and noted that lack of transportation had been posing problems for the village particularly as it relates to getting children  to school.
