Guyana needs an effective opposition which can propose better programmes

Dear Editor,

As an old overseas Guyanese reading papers from Guyana, one is either amused or angry at the news. There seems to be an unwillingness on the part of many parties’ supporters to see anything wrong with their party’s leadership or policies.  Some bloggers insist on calling each other “Soup drinkers”, while both sides blindly follow their party leaders regardless of their policies. Race seems to be the glue that drives their opinions and attitudes towards each other.

Unfortunately, any letter writer that does not support party actions but raises questions about the political scene is either ignored or maligned. So much for free speech and democratic governance.

Guyana needs an effective opposition that can help provide better governance by not only questioning past actions but proposing better ones.  They must work with government to bring greater progress by better using our natural resources to improve the lives of all Guyanese.

The name opposition does not mean just oppose everything, but only that which is bad, and support or propose better programmes.  There seems to be no mention of the opposition being involved in any of the programmes and projects being announced or proposed, so why not?

Too many seem willing to wait for their party to assume power rather than use what power they have to affect policies now.  Perhaps, I am naive and wrong on some things − but everything?

Yours faithfully,
