Cheddi Jagan and Chávez connected with ordinary people

Dear Editor,
The mass outpouring of grief and sympathy on the death of President Hugo Chávez brings back memories of the late Dr Cheddi Jagan whose funeral at Babu John saw the largest congregation of people in the country’s history.

If there is one thing both men had in common it was their ability to connect with the ordinary people whose lives had been touched directly by their programmes and policies.

The lesson to be learnt from men and women such as these is that people generally are not ungrateful to those who genuinely care for them and they will mourn their passing as in the case of Cheddi Jagan and Hugo Chávez.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
