GTI restarts agricultural mechanics programme

The Government Technical Institute (GTI) has resuscitated its Agricultural Mechanics Programme, augmented with new equipment from General Equipment (Genequip).

A Government Information Agency (GINA) report said the institution partners with the public and private sectors to determine and design programmes that meet the needs in the farming and mining sectors.

GTI Principal Carl Benn said the institution recently restarted the Agricultural Mechanics course and the workshop has been refurbished to this end. New lights have been installed and it has been outfitted with new equipment that will allow the students to put into practice the theoretical aspect of the course. Field trips are also facilitated with Genequip in order to boost students’ familiarity with the equipment.

Lecturer Reneato Yearwood said prior to Genequip’s donation, the agricultural machinery shop was in a challenging state but it is now able to give  students the level of training that is required of them in the field. He lauded the company for its contribution to the department, noting that it has made the students more enthusiastic about their work.

Dwayne Anderson, a student, said since the new workshop was commissioned, classes have improved.
