Business persons urged to be alert when moving cash – Home Affairs

The Ministry of Home Affairs in a press release yesterday urged business persons to be more alert while moving with large sums of money.  They were also urged to be mindful with whom they shared information about their businesses and their movements.

The ministry was reacting to the recent attack on a businessman, Cecil Gajadar, by bandits who attempted to steal a substantial amount of cash, while he was sitting in his car on Camp Street.

The release noted that although the businessman had approached the Ministry of Home Affairs in November 2011 in respect of an application for a firearm licence and representation had been made by the ministry on behalf of Gajadar, the police are yet to conclude the processing of the application.

The release said that the ministry was pleased that the bandits were thwarted in the robbery and that there was no loss of life or injuries sustained.  This, they said, was as a result of the prompt intervention by an alert police officer who was in the vicinity at the time.

The release said that the ministry and the Guyana Police Force remain committed to fighting crime but citizens have a responsibility to ensure that they do not make themselves easy targets.
