Expulsion recommended for students who booby-trapped Linden school

The students who booby-trapped a classroom at the Wisburg Secondary School, resulting in a teacher sustaining a fractured skull, may very well be expelled.

Education Ministry Public Relations Officer Suelle Williams told Stabroek News on Tuesday that Region 10’s Education Officer has submitted a list of students to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Olato Sam with a recommendation for expulsion.

It is not clear how many names were submitted to Sam.

Williams said, however, that a decision is yet to be made on the matter, owing to the fact that Education Minister Priya Manickchand is currently out of the country.

She nevertheless insisted that the matter remains important to the ministry and will be dealt with when Manickchand returns.  Michelle Richards, 25, a teacher at the Wisburg Secondary School, was rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital after a falling table top fractured her skull.

The incident was reportedly orchestrated by the fourth form students because of past altercations between them and the teacher.

The incident triggered a protest by teachers of the Wisburg school and other schools in Linden, who said they were also fed up with the disrespect meted out to them at the hands of their students.

The teachers were assured by Sam that their concerns would be addressed by the ministry.

Manickchand had stated last Thursday that the Ministry of Education was firmly on the side of the teachers in this matter and promised that harsh penalties awaited the students who attacked teachers.
