Does our economy have the capacity to absorb immigrants?

Dear Editor,

I am not at all sure that the indicative conclusion being suggested by the quotes from the study referred to by my friend and colleague Nowrang Persaud’s letter (in SN Saturday 23rd  March, 2013,) applies to the exceptionally under- populated economies like Guyana’s.

I would ask whether ours has the capacity to absorb immigrants in the first instance; and whether or not our substantive and sustainable development is not immediately related to the continuing development of indigenous human resources.

Interestingly while the indication appears to focus on ‘skills’, it is unclear whether management and other professional skills are included in this immigrant package.

One possible, of several implications, is who should be preferred for the opportunities to climb the organisation’s hierarchical ladder, rising from trade and technical capabilities to realizing their leadership potential.

I submit that Guyana’s employment profile does not reconcile with the model about which the reported study seems inclined to embrace.

Yours faithfully,
EB John
