GPOC says acted decisively on money missing from Mahdia Post Office

The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) has emphasised that it does not condone fraudulent activities at any level and it was on this premise that it probed matters at the Mahdia Post Office.

The corporation in a statement dated March 26 said it acts resolutely to investigate and curtail any misdemeanour should a staff member be found in breach of the standard operating procedures and policies.

The statement said that based on that premise, the management of GPOC acted decisively in the case of Mahdia.  It had discovered that the postmaster could not give an account for in excess of $15 million.

GPOC said it would like to advise that the investigation surrounding the Mahdia Post Office is within the jurisdiction of the Guyana Police Force.  The public is also advised that Oswald Whyte is no longer employed with GPOC and is not authorised to transact any business on behalf of the corporation.

GPOC was responding to the Kaieteur News’ March 26, 2013, article which was published under the headline, ‘Irregularities at Mahdia Post Office.’  GPOC said it “deems the Kaieteur Newspaper’s account of the ongoing investigation surrounding the Mahdia Post Office as inaccurate and mischievous.”  The corporation said no attempt was made by the newspaper to contact the Postmaster General to verify any speculation regarding the investigation.
