Arson attack launched on Campbellville house

In the wee hours of yesterday, a person unknown launched an arson attack on a Campbellville house gutting it and in the process scorching the sides of the homes of neighbours.

“The cause is malicious setting by persons unknown”, a Guyana Fire Service official told Stabroek News last evening.

At around 1:30 am yesterday neighbours recalled hearing an explosion sounding like a gunshot coming from the Lot 76 Stone Avenue, Campbellville house after which a person on a motorcycle sped away.

Neighbours quickly called the Fire Service and three fire engines responded from the Campbellville Fire Station. The blaze was contained to the house and subsequently put out. However the windows of the house one on side of the fire were shattered and the PVC fittings on the house on the other side melted and that house was scorched.

The house has been left unattended for over twenty years and is owned by a man  who is said to be in a United States prison.

It was occupied by a deported drug addict, who now cleans car windscreens at the Junction of Sheriff Street and the Railway Embankment Road. He was questioned by Fire Service officers and later sought refuge at a nearby empty lot. He stated that he was not in the building at the time of the fire.
Investigations are ongoing.
