Relief council makes donations to Albouystown, Tiger Bay fire victims

Seven families who lost their homes in recent fires in Albouystown and Tiger Bay yesterday received donations from the Guyana Relief Council.

Some of the items donated included mattresses, stoves and  rations.

Lisa Ashby, whose 13-member family lost their homes in the Albouystown fire, said that they were extremely grateful to the Council for the stuff that was donated. “It will do good because we didn’t have anything after the fire,” she explained.

She also said that her elderly father, Vonray Ashby, who is paralysed and had to be lifted from the burning building, is currently “coming around.” Her family is currently staying with family members and she and others are trying to get resources to rebuild their home.

It was a fire of unknown origin that destroyed their two-storey home, which was situated at Lot 145 James and Victoria streets in Albouystown on March 21.

Meanwhile, the Relief Council also made donations to six families who lost their homes in the March 26 Tiger Bay fire. They are the families of Tony Babb, Yolanda Bowman, Felicia Accra, Carlotta Thompson, Romel Myles and Eon Adams.

At the handing over yesterday, Lynette Carter, Administrative Officer of the Relief Council, said that the organisation is profoundly grateful to all who have supported its humanitarian work through their donations.

In a press release, the Relief Council noted that for the year, it has assisted 60 cases, involving 163 persons.
