Wish list

Dear Editor,

Now that APNU and the AFC have used their combined majority in Parliament and amended the PPP/C 2013 Budget we all need to be objective. From the APNU and AFC point of view they are saving taxpayer’s money. From the PPP/C point of view funding is critical to some projects, and a cut in funding may lead to price rises and curtail growth by 1% to 2%.

Although I am against the Budget cuts (or amendments) I believe that once the Budget amendments are over the PPP/C government of President Donald Ramotar can live with these severe cuts. The government can now get on with governing Guyana in the best interest of all Guyanese (as they were elected to do). Which brings me to my next topic. That is, what I would like to see achieved in 2013 by the PPP/C government.

I would like to see more people issued with radio licences.

I would like to see sugar production raised.

I would like to see the Linden electricity subsidy ended (protest or no protest). We are not going to be bullied into submission for doing the right and fair thing.

I would like to see another newspaper start up in Guyana.

I would like to see Linden becoming more multicultural.

I would like to see work started on the Amaila Falls Hydroelectric power plant.

I would like to see more being done to release funding from the LCDS Norway funds.

I would like to see personal income tax lowered from 30% to 25% and corporation tax lowered from 30% to 25% by mid-year. Leave the VAT at 16% alone; it is working where the consumption tax was failing.

I would like to see the commencement of work for local government elections.

I would like to see the Guyana dollar trading at G$100:US$1.

There is more for my wish list.

Yours faithfully,
Sean McLean
