‘This is the second coming of Sixhead’

“Age is just a number, I’m fit, I’m flexible and I could do a lot of things some young fighters can’t do.”
So said Guyana’s first world boxing champion, Andrew ‘SixHead’ Lewis yesterday when Stabroek Sport caught up with him while training for his upcoming bout against Jamaican, Sakima Mullings.

“I’m back, this is the second coming of ‘Sixhead’ and I am putting everything into it in the gym for this fight,” declared the former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion who was called out by Mullings last month after the Jamaican defeated Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman to win the vacant CABOFE welterweight title.

After a five-year hiatus why is the 42-year old Lewis (23-4, 2, 20KOs) taking on the 30-year old Mullings (12-1, 7KOs)?
“The reason I took the fight is because I was there when I saw him fight Eastman and I said to myself this guy does not have what it takes to beat me then I heard him calling me out so I’m stepping up to the plate.

“He (Mullings) is good fighter but I fought fighters miles ahead of him before and I don’t see him as a threat, he is not a world ranked fighter, I am the super star fighter for Guyana and I have to represent,” Lewis boasted.

‘SixHead’ continued: “No boy from the Caribbean can come and beat a local fighter and I stand up and see that no way, I’m going to take him and that’s because I know what I’m about.”

Mullings and Lewis will be fighting for the vacant WBA Fedcar welterweight crown.
When asked if he foresees winning the fight as a stepping stone to another world title shot, Lewis replied:“We will have to see how the road runs because the road is a little tough. We have to put in the work in the gym and try to make the road smooth as possible so right now I’m back on the road.”

The former champion also stated that ring rust would not be an issue and urged boxing fans to visit him while he trains to see shape he is in at the gym named in his honour.

”When you have the skill and talent like I do you can wake up in the middle of night and go 12 rounds, come and check the sugar foot in the gym. I invite everybody to come and see me prepare and see if I still got it, this would not be the end as long as I win this fight because a lot of challengers out there want to beat ‘Sixhead and I don’t back down from nobody.”
Lewis will be travelling to Jamaica next month to meet with promoters to agree on a contract for the fight which could perhaps occur in August or September in the ‘Land of Wood and Water’.
