Dear Editor,
The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce at a Statutory Meeting on Friday May 17, 2013 discussed the following issues:
1. The Chamber is calling on the opposition parties to urgently work with the government to ensure passage of the Anti-Money Laundering & Counter Terrorism legislation before the deadline identified. If Guyana defaults and has to face sanctions, the entire country, including constituencies of the opposition would suffer.
This is not an option. We do not feel it is appropriate to bargain with this important legislation and hope all parties would expeditiously examine and pass it.
2. Members are also calling on the government to explain the delay in the activation of the Public Procurement Commission which would ensure the accountability and transparency of all government procurement.
3. The Chamber is also urgently urging the relevant Minister to pursue measures to fill the void left by Delta Airlines on pulling out of Guyana. This is already having adverse effects on the travelling public through higher fares and having to book months in advance to travel in and out of Guyana, and it also affects the tourism sector.
