Mining needs to be organized and sustainable

Dear Editor,

With the advent of focusing on sustainable mining, I salute the initiative of the newly formed ministry responsible for mining in Guyana. Indeed, for too long mining in Guyana has been under severe constraints, and there have been poor environmental practices, the smuggling of minerals, trafficking persons and many negative effects from land and water dredges. I am so delighted to hear of operation El Dorado in action. I know many miners and those related to mining may cry foul, since their toes will be mashed. Changes will have to be made if our country is to move forward and improve in the area of mining. The launching of this big operation is most welcome as far as myself and many other miners.  I call on all those involved and those who will be affected in some way or the other to cooperate with the authorities so as to make our mining districts more organized, sustainable and free from those who are there to break the law and cause mining activities to become disorganized. There is information in the library situated in the compound of GGMC which miners need to know and educate themselves about. I call on all those involved to cooperate once again towards sustainable mining.

Yours faithfully,
Andrieko Basir
