Rohee at drug enforcement conference in Russia

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee is attending the 30th International Drug Enforcement Conference at the invitation of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation and the Drug Enforcement Admin-istration of the United States of America’s Department of Justice.

A release from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that he is accompanied by the Deputy Commission-er, Law Enforcement of the Guyana Police Force, Seelall Persaud and the Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit, James Singh.  The conference is being held from June 5 -7, 2013 at the World Trade Centre in Moscow, Russia.

The release said that the conference is an annual event which allows policy makers and senior law enforcement officials to discuss and develop additional strategies to counter the illegal trafficking, manufacture and use of drugs, as well as related illegal activities such as money laundering.

At the conference the minister held several bilateral meetings aimed at collaborating in joint efforts to counter the illegal drug trade.

The release said that so far, the minister reported on three meetings with the Russian Federation, South Africa and Brazil.

At the meeting with Igor N Zubov, State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, it was agreed that bilateral cooperation would be strengthened in the area of training police ranks.

The release said that information was exchanged on the two countries’ programmes for police reform.  The Russian deputy minister was apparently very interested in the Guyana community and neighbourhood policing programmes.

The release said that at the meeting with Nkosinathi Mthethwa, Minister responsible for the South African Police Service, it was agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding would be signed to further bilateral cooperation in combating the drug trade.

It was also agreed that a study would be done on the Triangular Drug Route of Guyana, Brazil and South Africa, with a view to suppressing it through joint efforts.
