A man was last Friday arraigned on charges that he assaulted his former wife.
The charges against Elton Amsterdam, 35, stated that on June 21 and July 10, respectively, at Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully assaulted Whitney Burkett.
The unrepresented father of one, who resides at 79 Brutus Street, Agricola, denied both charges when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Amsterdam asked the court to speak. The Magistrate, however, explained to him that he had entered not guilty pleas to the charges and cautioned that he should remain silent as the matters will go to trial.
No facts of what transpired on the day in question were presented. The virtual complainant was not present at court.
Inspector Burgette Grant had no objections to the defendant being admitted to bail, which was granted in the sum of $20,000 for each charge. The case continues on July 18.
