Fine, community service for man who had ganja for asthmatic daughter

Safraz Rahaman, who said that he was taking one gram of cannabis home to boil for his asthmatic daughter to drink, was on Tuesday fined $3,000 and ordered to do six months community service when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Rahaman accepted that on July 15 at Essequibo he had one gram of cannabis in his possession.

When asked if he smokes the illegal substance, Rahaman explained that he does not smoke it. Asked what he was doing with it, he said he was taking it home on the day in question to boil and be administered to his daughter, who is asthmatic.

The magistrate asked if the facts were as charged to which Prosecutor Vernette Pindar responded in the affirmative. No further details relating to the day in question were thereafter related to the court.

After hearing the case, the 35-year-old father of two was informed that he would be fined $3,000 together with six months community service.

The matter was heard at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
