Ganja users to do community service after guilty pleas

Three men were yesterday sentenced to do three months of community service and fined $5000 each after they pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.

Porknocker Ryan Samaroo, 21, of Angoys Avenue, New Amsterdam, Troy Fraser, of Number 28 Village, West Cost Berbice and Lakeram Ganesh of New Amsterdam were sentenced and fined in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court by Magistrate Rhondel Weaver.

Fraser was found with two grammes of cannabis at West Coast Berbice, while Ganesh and Samaroo were found with one and two grammes, respectively, at New Amsterdam.

According to Police Prosecutor Corporal Racquel Mars, police were performing patrol duties when they noticed the men, in separate circumstances, behaving in a suspicious manner.

The police stopped and searched them, unearthing the cannabis. The men made it known to the court that the illegal substance was for their personal use.

The three men are to start their community service from Monday. Samaroo and Ganesh are to report to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, while Fraser is to report at the Fort Wellington Police Station. They all have to report on Mondays and Fridays from 9am to 4pm for the next three months.
