Land dispute leads to assault charges

A land dispute saw two persons before the court on Wednesday on charges that they assaulted each other.

Pauline Lawrence, 48, of Lot 232 Grove and Andrew Blair, 23, of Lot 22 Shell Road, Kitty, allegedly and unlawfully assaulted each other on July 28 at Shell Road, Kitty.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read against them at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue stated that the defendants had a dispute over a plot of land located at Shell Road, Kitty. On the day of the assaults, he said, Blair was erecting a fence around the disputed plot of land and Lawrence, who heard of the fence being erected, approached, leading to a confrontation.

Attorney Melvin Duke stated that Lawrence went to the land on July 28 and was told by Blair that the land belonged to him. He added that the land had always been in Lawrence’s family.

He asked that bail be granted since Lawrence was no flight risk and had never had any prior troubles with the law.

Since prosecutor Rambajue had no objections to bail, Magistrate Fabayo Azore granted bail at $20,000 for each of the accused.

Duke asked for bail to be reduced, saying Lawrence did not have much money. As a result, bail was reduced for Lawrence to $10,000. The case was adjourned until 12 August, when it will be called at Court 10.
