Man on drug trafficking charge after stop and search uncovers ganja

Mark Angel was yesterday denied bail after he was charged with trafficking marijuana, which was allegedly found on him during a police stop and search in the city.

Angel, 28, of Lot 138 Waterloo Street, Georgetown, was allegedly found with 68 grammes of cannabis, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry was told when the charge was read yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt told the court that on September 8, police on mobile patrol in the West Ruimveldt area saw the accused acting in a suspicious manner.

As a result, they stopped and carried out a search on him and a black haversack he was carrying at the time.

The search unearthed several transparent plastic bags which contained, leaves, seeds and stems, later found to be cannabis, Hunt said.

Angel was remanded to prison until September 16.
