Teacher dies after collapsing during World Teachers Day march

A 50-year-old mother of two and teacher at the Grove Primary School collapsed and died shortly after participating in a march in observance of World Teachers’ Day on Friday.

Carlotta Blair of Lot 13 Walker Terrace, West Ruimveldt had reportedly told her colleagues that she was not feeling well, and after this disclosure, started bleeding through her nose and eventually collapsed.

The woman was then rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where she was pronounced dead.

According to her son Nedrie Wharton, he got the fateful call while he was at work. “I received a call from my aunt around 11.30 to come down to the Diamond Hospital because my mom had collapsed whilst she was taking part in the march and when I got there I was told that she died,” Wharton said.

The man acknowledged that his mother had a heart condition and that she had been diagnosed with hypertension.

Wharton said that his mother had been in the teaching profession for the past 23 years and had only been transferred to the Grove Primary last year where she taught grade four students.

Teachers from several schools were participating in the march which started outside the A. Ali and Sons Store at Grove and was scheduled to end at the Diamond Secondary School.
