`I was hoping to God that she was OK’

Vanessa Vyfhuis, 37, of Lot 385 North Ruimveldt was also pronounced dead at the hospital following yesterday’s standoff at Middle Street which claimed five lives.

Speaking to Stabroek News last night, her grief-stricken mother, Dolly October, said that she heard of Vyfhuis’ demise hours after she was shot. “We kept calling her cellphone but it kept going to voicemail…I didn’t know she was dead I just heard that there was a shoot-out at her work,” a saddened October related.

“I was hoping to God that she was okay,” she said, but added that Vyfhuis’ son called her and said she was shot dead at the scene.

“It’s real life and everything feels real…,” she lamented, adding that she had seen undertakers dumping her daughter’s lifeless body into a vehicle. “I saw her on the television on channel 67…I saw the blood on her…and the dress that she was wearing.”

Vanessa is survived by three children and her mother and siblings.
