Suspect charged over group attack on businessman in South Ruimveldt Gardens

A South Ruimveldt Gardens man was yesterday accused of being one of five men who attacked and robbed a businessman who was searching for a friend in the area.

It is alleged that on November 16, at South Ruimveldt Gardens, being in the company of others and armed with a gun, Nelson Pratt robbed Taharka Brathwaite of $47,000.

Pratt, who was represented by attorney Fung-A-Fat, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read against him yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. It is the police’s case that on November 16, at 10:30am, Brathwaite went to South Ruimveldt Gardens to search for a friend. He stopped at Brian Boyce, who resides at 280 South Ruimveldt Gardens, to enquire about his friend, and during this time Pratt along with four other men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered the yard. Pratt and the others approached Brathwaite and one of them hit him in his face with a gun. It is alleged that Pratt, pushed his hands in the Brathwaite’s right side pants pocket and took his money and the men then made good their escape.

The attack was reported and the police went to the scene with Brathwaite, who pointed out Pratt to them, leading to his arrest.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. Pratt was then remanded to prison until November 26.
