Why National Schools’ Championships rather than Schools’ National Championships?

Dear Editor,

I extend the very best of good wishes to all those young people and their teachers who have come from the four corners of Guyana to engage one another in healthy rivalry at the Castellani Pool, on the roadways, and in the National Stadium at Providence.

I trust that the storm in a teapot over the selection of the swimming team to represent Region 1 has been settled amicably; that the strategies promised by East Georgetown will bear fruit; and that the big guns of the other districts will turn out to be more than just damp squibs this year.

One other thing:  I note that the championships are being billed as “National Schools’ … Championships” rather than “Schools’ National … Championships.”  Is this a Freudian slip, or is this a reflection of a change in the conceptualization behind these championships?

Yours faithfully,
George N Cave
