Coaches get playing kits for Kashif and Shanghai tournament

The Kashif and Shanghai organization at a simple presentation ceremony yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue handed over the respective playing kits to the coaches of the competing schools for their upcoming secondary schools tournament.

The tournament which begins on December 8 at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda, will feature 24 schools from various locales of the nation competing in a knockout tournament.

Kashif and Shanghai Co-Director Kashif Muhammad stated “Preparation is progressing smoothly.The hope is that the weather holds so we can have a beautiful tournament. I like the enthusiasm displayed by the schools”.

“We went around to some of the schools and the preparation witnessed was very similar to that of senior tournaments. We believe we will get what we are hoping for which is to identify the next generation of players” said Muhammad.

The selection of the respective schools was based on the outcome of the annual Digicel nationwide football tournament. Winners of the event will receive $1,200,000 of which 75% must go towards the establishing of a sports oriented project at the institution.

Second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively, of which 25% must go towards the creation of a project of the school’s choice.

On the individual side, the event’s most valuable player will receive a laptop and the opportunity to have a one month training stint with a professional team in the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

The participating teams in the inaugural tournament from Linden are Christianburg/Wismar Secondary, Wisburg Secondary, New Silver City, and McKenzie High School.

Representing the West Demerara region will be Leonora Secondary, Stewartville Secondary, Uitvlugt Secondary and Patentia Secondary while the East Coast representatives are Bladen Hall, President College, Ann’s Grove Secondary and Annandale Secondary.

The Georgetown schools are St George’s, Lodge Secondary, East Ruimveldt, North George-town, Queens College, Dolphin Secon-dary, Christ Church and Queenstown Secon-dary whilst the East Bank institutions are represented by Covent Garden and Friendship Secondary.

The final two representatives are Ash Education Trust and Waramadong Secondary from out of the Berbice and Region No. 7 constituent’s respectively.
