Vehicle fraud accused on $300,000 bail

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted $300,000 bail to an Annandale man arraigned in court on Friday on fraud charges after he allegedly pretended to be in the capacity to sell three motor vehicles and accepted money from prospective buyers.

Raphael Mohammed, of 52 Annandale Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It was alleged that on December 2, at Georgetown, Mohammed took $650,000 from Ameer Usif, pretending to be authorized to sell motor vehicle PPP 9499.

The court also heard that on December 4, Mohammed allegedly tried to sell motor vehicle PKK 3172, to John Jones at $500,000 and on December 6 he allegedly accepted $580,000 from Sherwin Wray pretending once again to being in the position to sell motor vehicle PJJ 2545.

Reports were made and a subsequent arrest was made and charges ensued.

Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru did not object to bail but asked the court to grant it at a substantial sum.

The magistrate granted bail and ordered the accused to lodge his passport and report to the officer in charge of the fraud department at the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.

The case will be heard again on January 31, 2014 when statements will be filed.
