Mon Repos fatal crash driver charged with DUI

Seventeen-year-old Gidram Rasiawan was yesterday placed on $7,500 bail after he denied driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

According to a police press release, Rasiawan of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, who was involved in an accident on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) that claimed two lives, however, remains in police custody assisting with investigations.

On Sunday, around 8.30 pm Rasiawan allegedly drove number GLL 6514 at a fast rate on the Mon Repos, Public Road and collided with minibus BMM 8260.

The police said Rasiawan appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and collided with the minibus which was travelling in the opposite direction.

Driver of the minibus, Godfrey Daniels, 42, of Ann’s Grove, ECD, and passenger Shondel Yaw, 36, of Annandale, ECD were pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while several other persons sustained severe and minor injuries.
