Man gets one year in jail for assault of brother

A miner was yesterday sentenced to serve a year in jail after he admitted to threatening and assaulting his brother.

Rakesh Rampersaud, 53, of 108 Market Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, was also charged with damaging a wooden door, valued $7,000 and property of his brother Kenneth Rampersaud, when he appeared before Magistrate Leslie Sobers at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

The court was told that on February 17, at Grove Housing Scheme, Rakesh Rampersaud unlawfully assaulted Kenneth Rampersaud so as to cause him actual bodily harm and used abusive language on him.

When given the opportunity to explain his actions before sentencing, the accused told the court, “He been upstairs in the room and he told me not to go in the room and [I] go and push open the door and it fall down. I was drunk at the time, so I was not really thinking.”
