Miner accused of attempted murder, armed robbery

Miner Darrel Gilkes was remanded yesterday on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Gilkes, 22, of 19 Block ‘E,’ Sophia, appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with attempting to murder Seon Madison.

It is alleged that he discharged a loaded firearm at Madison on April 2, at Georgetown, with the intent to commit murder.

Gilkes was also charged with armed robbery based on the allegation that on April 2, at Georgetown, being armed with a gun, he robbed Collin Fraser of a $90,000 gold chain.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Attorney Leslie Sobers, who appeared for Gilkes, said that his client was shocked and amazed at the charges leveled against him and he asked for him to be released on reasonable since he posed no risk of flight.

Counsel added that if Gilkes is granted bail, he would ensure that he attends court as directed. He also noted that his client had been cooperating with police investigations.

Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hosannah objected to bail on the grounds that Madison is still hospitalised.
As a result, bail was denied and the case was transferred to the Court One for April 24.
