The policeman fingered an accident on Sunday which claimed the life of a child yesterday denied that he was driving under the influence at the time.

Police said in a press release that Sergeant Shivram Murugayya was charged with driving under the influence and driving an unlicensed motor vehicle.

He appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate Court where he pleaded “not guilty” to both charges, and was placed on bail to return to court on January 14, 2014.

The press release did not state the amount of bail and Stabroek News was unable to ascertain the figure.

According to the police, 11-year-old Edgar Haymer was struck down in a hit and run accident on Sunday while he was crossing the road at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. The policeman was subsequently held.

The press release said that at the time of the accident, the policeman was over the legal limit in alcohol consumption and had to be pursued by public-spirited citizens.
