Linden champs eliminate G/town champs

Linden Champions Silver Bullets eliminated Georgetown Champions Leopold Street 2-0 as action in the inaugural Guinness Greatest of the Streets National Championships continued at the Demerara Park Tarmac (Banks DIH Parking Lot), Industrial Estate on Sunday.

The diminutive Nigel Bennette would open the scoring for the Linden side in the eighth minute. Bennette upon receiving the ball in his defensive third sprinted past his marker to strike the ball with the outside of his right leg on the left flank to find the back of the net.

The nail in the Leopold coffin was applied in the 14th minute as unmarked Clifton Alley slotted home his right footed effort to effectively seal the contest.

In a post match comment coach of Silver Bullets Felix Innis stated “Basically we have a lot of confidence never mind we have no big name players. The word ‘team’ means team and once we continue with that no one beating us.”

Back Circle, powered by an Andy Duke double in the eight and 14th minutes, demolished Silent Assassins 3-0. Duke opened his account with a right footed strike after playing a cheeky one-two combination with Vincent Thomas that sparked wild celebrations among the crowd.

Cutting in from the wider areas, Duke would complete his double as he unleashed a well paced right footed effort that evaded the Linden unit’s last defender. Wayne Wilson would add his name to the scorer’s sheet in the fourth minute.

Plaisance, led by a brace from mercurial forward Warren Gilkes in the 12th and 20th minutes, defeated Millenium 3-1. Teyon Esmond added to the score line for the East Coast Champions in the 17th minute. Orland Angus was on target for Millenium in the fourth minute.

Plaisance Coach Johan Joaquim in an invited comment said “We will play more possession football in the next round. Most of the teams isn’t playing collectively as a unit, we seen a lot of individual skill but my team playing collectively. I can assure you my team can play with more authority and I am going to win this tournament.”

Hardcore defeated Victoria Church Yard 2-0 on sudden death kicks as regulation time and penalty kicks was unable to separate the two sides.  Normal time ended nil-all while penalties were locked at 2-2.

In the two earlier exhibition fixtures, Guinness Bar defeated Oasis Taxi Service 3-0 while the Banks DIH overcame the Media 2-0.
