Stoby smashes his own World deadlift record

Masters Two 74-kilogramme World deadlift record holder Winston ‘Little Master’ Stoby impressively warmed up for upcoming international competitions by breaking his own deadlift record on Sunday when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) staged its 2013 Intermediate and Masters Championships at the University of Guyana Campus.

The ‘Little Master’ who will aim to maintain or improve his poundage at  the NAPF North American/ FE.SO.PO Pan American/ Caribbean Islands Power-lifting Championships and the World Masters Champion-ships next month and in September, broke his World record of 275kgs in front of a small but animated crowd at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre at the University of Guyana campus.

The 54-year-old goldsmith, who trains at the Kingsrow Barbell Gym, deadlifted 277.5kgs to rewrite the record books and emphatically signal his intentions to add more gold medals to his bulging collection.

On Sunday, Stoby also bench pressed 140kgs and squatted 240kgs. His total of 665 kgs and Wilks score of 479.51 was also enough to lift the Masters overall trophy ahead of John ‘Big John’ Edwards, Masters One 120kgs winner (total 765kgs, Wilks score 444.61) and Masters Two 93kgs winner Errol Henry (total 620kgs, Wilks score 394.69).

Edwards, the 2011 World Masters bronze medalist’s total was modest by his usual standards.

Stoby set the World deadlift record in Killeen, Texas last October at the World Masters Championships.

Meanwhile, Hardat Tarson of Hardcore Gym in Berbice was adjudged the 2013 overall intermediate champion ahead of last year’s national novice’s bodybuilding champion from Fitness Revolution Gym, Donnell Perry.

Tarson, who also won the 74kgs first place trophy with lifts of 242.5kgs, 132.5kgs and 240kgs (total 615 kgs) in the squat, bench press and deadlift routines respectively, had a Wilks score of 448.95.

Perry, who won the 66kgs category on Sunday with lifts of 207.5kgs in the squat, 110kgs in the bench press and 207.5kgs in the deadlift (525 kgs total), Wilks’ score of 419.92, was lower than Tarson’s.

On the distaff side, Perry’s gym mate and this year’s women’s overall novices powerlifting champion, Natoya Robinson was adjudged the top intermediate lifter after recording a Wilks score of 325.62 just ahead of her gym mate Chitra Ramlochand (322.75).

Robinson the 84+ kgs champion recorded a total of 402.5kgs after squatting 165kgs, bench pressing 62.5kgs and deadlifting 175kgs. Ramlochand who took the top honours in the 72kgs category benched 52.5kgs, squatted 137.5kgs and deadlifted 122.5kgs to record a total of 312.5kgs.

Other categorical winners in the intermediate competition were Steffie DeNobrega (52kgs) with a total of 225kgs (Wilks 302) Adrian Ramlall, (59kgs) with a total of 355kgs (Wilks score 316), Shenella Austin (72kgs) total 240kgs (Wilks score 245), Mariano Jeffrey (93kgs) with a total of 645kgs (Wilks score 416) and Roshan Ally (120kgs) with a total of 625kgs (Wilks score 372).

The event, which was sponsored by Fitness Express, Ansa McAL, IPA Pharmacy, New GPC and Demerara Bank was deemed a success and will be followed up by the Senior National Champion-ships in November.
