Guyana men make light work of OECS as C/bean team c/hips begin

Guyana easily defeated the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) as the team playoffs in the Digicel 2013 Senior Caribbean Squash Championships powered by Powerade and Smalta commenced at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts yesterday.

Richard Chin disposed of Jules Snagg in straight sets 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 in the opening match; Alexander Arjoon would defeat Kevin Hannaway in straight sets 11-8, 12-10, 11-4 while Kristian Jeffrey downed Kevin Bailey 11-6, 11-9, 11-6 to further strengthen Guyana’s lead.

Guyana would book their spot in the next round as Jamal Callender pummeled Jason Doyle 11-6, 11-2, 11-6 and Jason Ray Khalil trounced Dion Anselm 11-9, 11-6, 11-5.

Jamaica, led by men’s singles champion Chris Binnie swept Barbados in their team fixture.

Binnie in the opening match proved too strong for Gavin Cumberbatch as he won by an 11-5, 11-3, 11-8 score line while Dane Schwier came from behind to edge Bryant Cumberbatch in a closely fought match 11-5, 6-11, 8-11, 11-1, 11-2 to give Jamaica a 2-0 lead. Bruce Burrowes would continue the Jamaican dominance as he defeated Shawn Simpson 11-3, 11-5, 11-3.

Jamaica would seal their berth to the next round as Bruce Levy defeated Zaki Williams 12-10, 11-9, 11-6 and Julian Morrison edged Rhett Cumberbatch 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 15-13.
