No respite from dumping of garbage

Dumping of garbage remains a constant as Guyana begins a new year today.

Companies operating at Industrial Site, Ruimveldt have expressed disgust over a huge pile of garbage that constantly appears at the intersection of Industrial Site and Mandela Avenue.

Yesterday, one company resolved to exercise vigilance to catch and prevent the perpetrators from continuing their filthy habit this year.

Stabroek News spoke to an official from a company operating in the area, who asked that the name of the company

not be mentioned. The man said they noticed the pile-up of garbage at the start of December and at their last management meeting, a commitment was made to be more vigilant.

The official further stated, that the company’s garbage is taken away daily by Cevon’s Waste Management. He added that the only solution to the problem was finding the perpetrators and this might take a collaborative effort by all businesses operating in the area.

A vendor in the area told this newspaper that she believes persons from Albouystown, West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme and Alexander Village were responsible for the garbage pile. “When I come here in the mornings [about 7.30 am] I does see the pile-up of garbage,” the vendor said. “A man use to burn it, but like he get fed-up,” or perhaps the rain prevented him from burning it, she added. According to her, the eyesore appeared since the start of December.

A security guard working in the area said he had noticed a man carrying a cart full of garbage around 7 in the evenings a few weeks now.

The guard, who also chose to remain anonymous, opined that persons from the neighbouring wards would hire vagrants to dump their garbage at the intersection.

A mechanic working not too far from the garbage heap said the dumping had been going on far longer, perhaps two years now.

He said the “dumpers” would even burn the garbage themselves. And at one time it resulted in the Guyana Fire Service being summoned as the fire had grown into an inferno. “Is mostly people with push cart who come to dump garbage here and I think that it is becoming an eye sore,” the mechanic vented.

Workers at the nearby Mayor and City Council Daycare Complex said the dumping has been happening for a while.

Last month, the Ministry of Local Government had conducted a clean-up campaign in sections of Alexander Village, one of the wards where it is alleged the dumped garbage came from.
