I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Guyana. They really do know how to celebrate Christmas. My major concern during my trip was about road safety and whether I could get from one place to the other safely.
Despite witnessing dramatic development and overall progress in many areas, there seems to be a recurring problem in the ability to maintain the good condition of the roads on the West Coast of Demerara. I also fully understand the roads were not made to accommodate the steep rise both in the number and types of vehicles, and it will take some time to address this issue.
My single concern is simple: why is it so hard to maintain a single white dividing line in the middle of the road? It is not rocket science; it is just that the contractor needs to use the correct paint. It is a basic requirement on any public road.
This should be done every year or other year as part of the Ministry of Public Works annual maintenance budget for Region 3. It is critical for both saving lives and basic road safety.
As an update, I contacted both the local Region 3 RDC and the Ministry of Public Works and no seem to know who is responsible for this process.
I look forward to this being accomplished before Mashramani 2014. It will be a big boost to the folks on the West Coast of Demerara, especially those who use the road often.
