Theft of electricity

Dear Editor,

I have been hearing about GPL’s problem with persons stealing electricity which is causing the company a lot of losses financially.

I am also aware that the meters of many persons were checked by GPL technicians, and when they were found guilty of stealing electricity, they were either made to pay large sums of money before they were reconnected or, in some instances, they were locked up. As far as I am concerned, these are reasonable recourses.

In light of the above, I am totally baffled that my upstairs neighbours have been stealing electricity for quite

sometime now, seemingly without any repercussions. The top flat has no meter and there is one line to my home from the post and another line to upstairs, even though there is no meter. I have reported this matter to GPL several times, and sometimes the crew comes and disconnects their electricity and then they come back and reconnect them. As far as I am aware, none of the individuals has ever been charged, but somehow get their electricity reconnected.

The last thing I did to try to get this matter rectified, was to report it to the CEO of GPL, who gave me full assurance that he would look into the matter; that was approximately three weeks ago, but the home of these individuals continues to receive a constant flow of electricity and they seemingly have suffered no repercussions for their actions.

I would be grateful if the relevant authorities could look into having this matter resolved.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
