French speaker remanded on illegal entry charge

A French-speaking man, accused of illegally entering Guyana, was yesterday remanded to prison after failing to provide a place of abode to a city magistrate.

Jamal DeBreau pleaded not guilty to a charge of illegal entry when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The charge alleged that DeBreau, on January 21, at Lethem, entered Guyana by crossing a land frontier and failed to present himself to an immigration officer.

Via a translator, DeBreau, 54, explained that he had been staying with a friend in Lethem. However, he was unable to provide an address for the said friend.

Considering this information, Prosecutor Renetta Bentham objected to bail, stating that the man might be a flight risk. DeBreau was therefore remanded into custody.

After it was communicated to him, a distressed DeBreau expressed his dismay at the decision. He will make another appearance on February 25 in Court 1.
