Does a police officer need a valid driver’s licence to drive on the country’s roads?

Dear Editor,

I would like the spokesperson of the Guyana Police Force to publicly answer a simple question: Can police officers drive or ride on the public roads of Guyana without a valid driver’s licence? Editor, I am asking this question because a police officer told me bluntly to my face that he has the right to traverse the roads with motor vehicles without a valid licence. He further said that police officers are trained to do so. I find his statement most mind boggling and wish to publicly seek clarity on the issue.

Yours faithfully, Ganesh Mahipaul
