Recertify premises to avoid electrical fires – GPL

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is encouraging the public to have their premises recertified every ten years as this can greatly aid in mitigating fires of electrical origin.

Customers should have their premises recertified in conjunction with the Electricity Sector Regulations, GPL said in a press release. This will lessen the dangers associated with old wiring.

GPL service disconnection and restoration as it relates to community fires is of paramount importance and the company will disconnect a customer or customers’ electrical service during a fire following a report.

On Tuesday morning the company shut down power supply to all customers connected to the F9 Feeder in response to reports of a fire in Prashad Nagar. Customers in Prashad Nagar, Kitty and Campbellville were affected for less than an hour from 7.45 am.

“The Company will take all necessary safety measures required once we have received a report and/or identified a hazardous situation that can result in fires,” the statement said.
