Parliamentary committee holds meeting on ERC nominees

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointments has announced the representatives of the 10 constituencies that will be consulted for nominations to the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC).

At the briefing, held on Wednesday April 30 at the Guyana International Conference Centre, the Standing Committee on Appointments met the individuals identified in their respective groups to coordinate the nomination process to finality, a press release from the Parliament Office said.

The nominees from the religious bodies are Swami Aksharananda of the Cornelia Ida Hindu Temple, representing the Hindu religion; Derrick Rahat of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, representing the Islamic religion and Onya Sam of the Guyana Missionary Baptists, representing the Christian religion.

The private sector bodies will be represented by Treina F Butts of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana; the labour union bodies by Dale Beresford of the Guyana Local Government Officers Union; the women’s bodies by Karen De Souza of Red Thread Women’s Development Project and the youth bodies by Kwame McCoy of the Guyana Youth Development Association.

The nominees for the cultural/ethnic groups are Michael McGarrell of the Amerindian People’s Association; Rickie Park of the Pan African Movement and Neaz Subhan of the Indian Arrival committee.
