Rebecca Low cruises on opening night of national junior squash c/ships

Rebecca Low crushed Jamila DaSilva 3-0 in their under-15 female divisional matchup when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Digicel sponsored national junior championships commenced at the Georgetown Club on Tuesday.

Low took the opening set, winning by an 11-0 margin. She would cruise to a 2-0 advantage as she won the second set by an 11-1 score line. The win would be completed in a similar manner as she took the third set 11-0. In the Boys’ under-11 division, Demetrius DeAbreu overcame Ethan Jonas by a 2-1 margin. Surrendering the first set by a 15-13 score, DeAbreu stormed back to claim the final two sets 11-8 and 11-7 respectively.

Continuing in the same division, Dominic Collins edged Nechemiyah Levans 11-9, 11-13 and 11-3 while Michael Alphonso defeated Rajiv Lee in straight sets 11-1 and 11-6. The final matchup in the division saw Gianni Carpenter blanking Nathan Rahaman 11-1 and 11-0.

In the Novices Boys under-11 section, Liam Carpenter defeated Tome Reis 11-7, 7-11, 11-7 and James Mekdeci squeaked past Kamir Khan 13-11, 7-11 and 11-9.

The tournament features 43 junior players divided into 11 categories varying in number. The tournament continues each night this week beginning at 6pm at the Georgetown Club and will conclude on Sunday.  The GSA will use this tournament as a yardstick to help select the team for the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships scheduled to be held in Bermuda, July 11 – 19, 2014. The Guyanese are the nine times defending champions.
